Why do people take pride in non-achievements?

Why are some people proud of their race, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, etc?

It seems silly. You should be proud that you aced that exam, or that you earned enough to take care of family, not of some trivial fact.
Pride is an abstract concept of human emotion. Who ever said that emotional feelings require checked and balanced rules to have 'permission' to feel them? It seems silly that you need arbitrary rules to give yourself permission to feel anything.
Okay sure, but this pride is as irrational as any phobia is or something like racism.

If people can call others asses for being racist, why can't I call someone proud of their color, an ass? I'm not proud of my color, why would I be? I think strong racial agency is detrimental to any sort of assimilation.
Russians are the best! I'm russian and I'm very proud of it.
